Co. Clare VEC also administers the Burren Outdoor Education Centre, Turlough, Bell Harbour, Co. Clare
The Burren OEC provides quality Outdoor Education Services to people of all ages, especially to those involved in various education programmes. These programmes can meet specific curricular needs - Geography and Ecology field studies, Leaving Cert. Applied modules etc or they can combine modules to promote non-formal education and learning.
The aims of our Outdoor Education programmes include
- Enjoyment, success and achievement
- Participation in new activities and acquisition of new skills
- Development of an interest in being active and of having a healthy lifestyle
- Development of self-confidence and positive self image
- Development of life long interest in physical activity and the environment
Activities available include caving, kayaking, rock climbing, hill walking, orienteering, body boarding, snorkelling (summer only) and team games
The Burren OEC is a purpose built facility situated amid the curved limestone hills of the Burren. The centre has hostel style accommodation for up to 54 people in a combination of dorm types. Facilities include dining room, games room, meeting / classroom, drying room, showers and outdoor playing area.
Up to eighteen people work at the centre including outdoor tutors, administration, catering and caretaking staff.
